Cacophony & Polyphony

Sitting down and hearing what someone has to say is easy, right? Not always. Truly listening to, not just hearing, what someone is saying can be challenging at times, especially when we are listening for God’s voice. This Sunday, the Rev. Dr. Katharine Rhodes Henderson, president of Auburn Theological Seminary in New York, will join us as our guest preacher and the Barbara Noojin Walthall lecturer. She’ll deliver a sermon during the 8:45 and 11 am worship services entitled “Cacophony & Polyphony,” which will be on passages in both the Old and New Testaments that refer to listening to the voice of God.

Dr. Henderson is the author, internationally-known speaker, and co-founder of Face to Face | Faith to Faith- a multifaith program educating young leaders to become peacemakers. In addition to morning worship, you’ll have two additional opportunities to hear her speak Sunday. She will lead a talk called “Postcards from the Future: Embodying Jesus for Such a Time as This” in Highland Hall at 10 am Sunday. You all are also invited to an informal theological discussion with her at 6:15 pm at Clubhouse on Highland. There will be wonderful conversation, heavy hors d’oeuvres and liquid refreshment provided. We are cancelling Second Sunday Supper to give more people an opportunity to join us. Please let my administrative assistant, Alynn LeBerte, know by Friday, October 11 if you plan on coming to the Sunday evening event with Dr. Henderson at the Clubhouse. Alynn’s email address is

I also highly encourage you to attend the Vespers Service Sunday at 4 pm in the sanctuary. Music & Fine Arts director Dr. Jeff McLelland and the IPC Choir will give us a preview of the featured choral work, “Benedicite,” during the morning worship services. The choral work by Andrew Carter is inspired by animal carvings in the restored vault of York Minister in England. All three IPC choirs (children’s, youth and adult) will sing in this service. The music will depict all the works of the Lord, including the sun and moon, whales and waters, butterflies and moths, thunder and lightning, and so much more! Childcare will be available in Highland Hall, so please make time to join us for this special service.

See you Sunday!
