Leaving family at the end of a visit is never easy. It was particularly challenging for Jane and me to say goodbye to my mother, sons, sisters, brother, cousin and their families Wednesday morning in Oklahoma. All my preacher relatives and I led the memorial service Tuesday afternoon at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. My father, Dr. William Carl, Jr., founded that church and led the congregation for 35 years providing members with words of comfort and peace on countless occasions. On Tuesday, the congregation returned the gesture. Your prayers and kind words have also brought comfort to Jane and me over the last week. We cannot thank you enough.
We returned Thursday in time for what was an incredible Religious Arts Festival Banquet with one of the titular organists from the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, Paris, Vincent Dubois. If you weren’t able to get tickets to this sold out event, you can hear him play the organ during the IPC Choir Concert Sunday at 3 pm in the Sanctuary. The concert will also feature soloists and Epiphany Dancers of Nashville, TN. The event is free and open to the public.
Sunday is the Mercedes Marathon Sunday. Since the race route goes right in front of IPC, we will not have morning services at 8:45 am or 11 am. Sunday school also will not meet. However, in addition to the IPC Concert, we will have 5pm worship in Highland Hall (where I will be preaching) followed by a Second Sunday Supper. If you haven’t had the opportunity to see Highland Hall or hear its wonderful new sound system since the renovation has been completed, this will be a great service for you to attend. Dress is casual and the joy is palpable!
If you’d like to find another way to give Glory to God that morning, consider volunteering at the marathon water station outside the church or with the CFAF Garden Club at the Children’s Fresh Air Farm. You can find more information about both opportunities below.
Finally, Wednesday is Valentine’s Day. More importantly, it’s also Ash Wednesday and the start of the Season of Lent. Services with Holy Communion and the disposition of ashes will be held in the Sanctuary at 12 and 6:30 pm. We will not have Wednesday night adult classes or youth group. But dinner will be served. Please stop by for dinner and stay for service.
See you Sunday,
