The Season of Advent

The Christmas tree in the parlor is lit. Wreaths and garland will be hung next week as we deck the halls for Advent and Christmas. Advent, the liturgical season of preparation for the birth of the Christ-child, begins Sunday. Remember that our tradition at IPC during Advent and Lent is to wear purple since that’s the color of both seasons. Clergy will have purple robe or stole on, so you can help us continue that color theme with what you wear to church for the next four Sundays.

Also, this Sunday I’m beginning a four week series of sermons on Jesus as seen through the Letter to the Hebrews. This sermon is titled, "GREATER THAN ANGELS." In January and February, I will continue the Christological theme with more sermons on Jesus as seen in the Gospels.

Just as your social calendar is filling with gatherings, we too are preparing for celebrations at IPC. You will want to check our calendar for our list of special events. We have four busy weeks coming up leading to Christmas. This Sunday, families are invited to the Advent workshop for crafts, dinner and worship. Also beginning Sunday, you will be able to give the gift of assistance by making a donation through the Giving Tree to select charities in honor of a loved one. You will receive a card to send to that person being honored with the gift. Look for the Giving Tree in the parlor before and after morning worship on Sundays or on Wednesdays between 11 am- 2 pm in December. You won’t want to miss these celebrations

If you are looking for a way to serve, consider volunteering at the Advent workshop or Holiday House. The annual Holiday House tour is still looking for bakers, hostesses and parking assistants. You can find more information below. While we are talking about the tour, I want to tell you about the shuttle service. We will be providing shuttles from the IPC parking lot to the Schleusner, Holman and Delaney houses. At the request of Mountain Brook Police, please park your car at IPC and shuttle to those locations. We hope this will also make it easier for you to sit back and enjoy what’s going to be another incredibly successful Holiday House Tour.

See you Sunday,

Bill
