Volunteer Opportunities with The Open Door
In a state where roughly 15 percent of adults are functionally illiterate, The Open Door: A Ministry of Independent Presbyterian Church needs your help with its pilot literacy/ESL program for adults in the North Avondale and Kingston neighborhoods.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL) TUTORS: Tutors will undergo training with The Literacy Council of Central Alabama to help adults learn to speak English on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9 - 11 am.
BASIC LITERACY VOLUNTEERS: Tutors will undergo training with The Literacy Council of Central Alabama to work one-on-one with adults to help them learn to read on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9 - 11 am.
GED VOLUNTEERS: Tutors will undergo training to assist Jefferson State Community College instructors with GED classes Monday through Thursday from 9 am - 1 pm.
RECEPTIONIST: Volunteers need to staff the front desk for a few hours between 8:30 am - 1 pm Monday through Thursday.

Volunteer Opportunities with Children
STAIR TUTORS: Consider giving a child the gift (and love) of reading. Tutors are needed to help second graders from Hayes K-8 learn to read at IPC on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3- 5pm. Volunteer Opportunities in the Catechesis Atrium at IPC

Sunday Morning Atrium Helper: We are looking for volunteers who would be interested in working with our 6-9 year-old children (1st-3rd graders) in the Level II atrium during the Sunday school hour (10:00-10:50 am). Volunteers will be trained to assist our catechists (teachers) with guiding the children in their small group atrium work. Volunteers can commit as little as 1 Sunday a semester or more often as desired. Training sessions can be arranged on an individual basis.
Atrium Crafts Person: We are always looking for volunteers to help us build our handmade lessons for the Level I and Level II atria. If you enjoy woodworking, sewing, needlework, painting, calligraphy, or making clay figures, we would love to talk to you about helping us make some of our lesson materials or helping us with simple repairs. Projects range from simple painting and copying Scripture, to painting more detailed figures and woodworking projects. All levels of experience are welcome!
Trained Catechist: We are always looking for volunteers who would like to become certified catechists (teachers) in the Level I and II atria. Catechists work with the children on Sunday morning one-on-one (Level I) or in small groups (Level II) sharing God’s word, learning of His great love for us, and learning about how we worship. Level I catechists work with the 3-6 year-old children and Level II catechists work with 6-9 year-old children. The training course for Level I is 80 hours and offered at different times of the year in different scheduling formats (e.g., weekday, weekend, summer intensive).
