The Acolyte program at IPC was begun in the late 1940s by then pastor Dr. John N. Lukens.
Following is the prayer by Rev. Lucy Turner for the Acolyte installation.
Gracious Lord, we thank you today for the silent service of our acolytes. It is not by eloquent language that they instruct. It is not by theological argument that they persuade. It is not in soaring music that they inspire. It is not in honesty of prayer that they speak. Yet their ministry among us —their presence in worship-- is a constant affirmation of your presence and your promise. For in lifting high your cross before us they proclaim your resurrection. In the lighting of candles they urge us toward you, the light coming into the world: the light that darkness will never overcome. Let their installation be a sacred moment in their life of service to you. Let our honor of their work be a seal upon their hearts. In your holy name we pray. Amen.
