Community Ministries at Independent Presbyterian Church is that part of the church’s ministry in which we seek to reach out beyond our own walls to serve people in need in our own community and around the world. We also seek to address the systemic issues that threaten the abundant life God intends for each human being such as poverty, hunger, addiction, racism, war and its ravages, and injustice in any form. We seek to partner with God in working for the fulfillment of God’s gracious Kingdom begun in Jesus Christ. In all our ministries, we seek to live out the call of Jesus Christ:
“I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me…just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” (Matthew 25:35-36, 40).
We seek to follow this command of Jesus by offering our congregation the opportunity to express their faith in Jesus Christ in concrete acts of compassionate service and mission both locally and globally. We invite you to join us in these mission opportunities.
Locally, Community Ministries continues to offer the oldest outreach ministry of Independent Presbyterian Church through our Children’s Fresh Air Farm Summer Learning Program
, located in Bluff Park. This ministry began in 1923 and continues today with summer and year-round programs for low-income children from our community.
We also feel called to reach out to God’s people in need in other places around the globe. As part of our ministry, we invite members of our church to participate in mission trips to four places around the world where we have developed long-term mission partnerships. We take mission teams each year to Mexico
to build homes for low-income families in Piedras Negras on the border of Mexico with Constructores Para Cristo
A team also goes each year to The Mwandi Mission
in Mwandi Zambia where we do both medical and non-medical work with adults and children of all ages in this Sub-Saharan African nation. We also travel to Honduras with medical mission teams to do surgical and medical care for those living in poverty in this Central American country. Finally, we take teams to Ukraine
where we help in the leadership of Vacation Bible School for children and orphans.
